13 key research themes with a strong social and future relevance are the core of the special programme GEOTECHNOLOGIEN. They cover issues on all scales - from global dynamics to atomic processes.

Useful concepts and answers to the modern societal demands can only be created by a deep understanding of the System Earth, with all it's natural processes, interlinked in most complex ways.

The modern geosciences are especially asked to cross the borders to neighboring sciences, whether they are engineering, natural or social sciences. In the meantime, public-private partnership has to be established. Co-operation and support in both ways, from economy and politics have to be fostered to create a strong fundamental basis for a sustainable Earth System Management.

This comprehensive approach is the fundamental idea of the Research and Development (R&D) Programme GEOTECHNOLOGIEN. Its 13 interdisciplinary and thematically adjusted key research themes enables us to see the "Habitat Earth" both from a global perspective by remote sensing from space and by a microcosmic point of view within the dimensions of crystals and minerals.

Hence, ideas and knowledge can be bundled and new synergistic effects will be created, which otherwise the single disciplines would not generate. The GEOTECHNOLOGIEN programme consequently continues and expands the newly established paradigm shift from strong disciplinary research to transdisciplinary scientific concepts.

Interdisciplinary research joint ventures are preferred, in which research institutions and enterprises are align with each other. While the programme is assigned to support German projects only, the programmes philosophy is to integrate all it's research into international programmes, too.
