Restless Earth
Natural Hazards and their risk potential
Dark red, incandenscent lava streams in high fountains from hidden vents, colliding crustal plates shake the earth, and first slow, than rapid movements of soil bury whole areas. Nature's powerful events like volcanoes, earthquakes and landslides, but also external forces like meteorites, from the surface of our planet substantially - being awesome phenomena and at the same time awful testimonials of the dynamic processes deep within Earth.
The various faces of natural events have been at the focus of the GEOTECHNOLOGIEN travelling exhibition "Unruhige Erde" (restless Earth). From September 2006 until October 2009, the exhibition travelled throughout Germany, showing volcanoes, earthquakes, landslide and meteorites from a scientific point of view. "Unruhige Erde" presented powerful high resolution large screen pictures, informative media and interactive exhibits about the scientific observation of natural events. Furthermore, "Unruhige Erde" showed new ways and innovative technologies for Early Warning. Computer animated videos of tsunamis and earthquakes, audio-visual presentations of the "Sound from Mother Earth" and live-pictures from volcanoes are presented to the visitors. Besides all this, the "Ask a Prof."-Projects collected questions from visitors and gave answers in close cooperation with the top rank experts from universities and research institutions.
The exhibition "Unruhige Erde" (Restless Earth) was part of public relations according the GEOTECHNOLOGIEN key area Early Warning Systems against Natural Hazards.
